❤️ A Stunning University Pub.
Situated midway between the historic Lincoln’s Inn Fields and Aldwych on the outskirts of Holborn, The George IV is conveniently located, with Holborn Tube Station just a five-minute stroll away.
Originally licensed in 1823, this pub underwent reconstruction in 1899 under the supervision of Hoare & Co, and later, in 1933, it fell under the management of Charringtons. Hoare’s brewery, situated in Lower East Smithfield, left its mark with a distinctive toby jug, eventually becoming part of the iconic Bass Charrington trademark. Presently, The George IV is owned and operated by The London School of Economics.
Stepping inside, one is greeted by a beautifully adorned pub, exuding Victorian opulence. The servery, featuring an angled design, boasts a simple yet ornate back bar. Above it, a cast iron nameplate from a train, bearing the inscription ‘London School of Economics,’ adds to the pub’s unique charm. Dark wood interiors, captivating elements such as a stunning ceiling, etched windows and mirrors, a marble fire surround with floral ceramic tiles, and intricate Corinthian columns contribute to the pub’s distinctive character. The seating predominantly consists of low-level options, complemented by a few poser tables and a drinking ledge by a window. Upstairs, the ‘Beavers Retreat’ bar is available for private bookings.
The pub offers an impressive selection of beers, featuring two cask ales and an array of uncommon brews not typically found together. Opting for a pint of Camden Hells, I found it to be excellent, with the pricing falling within the average range. Notably, The George IV operates as a wet-led establishment, omitting food service.
During my visit on a Thursday afternoon in October around 5:30 pm, the pub was bustling with activity, both indoors and outdoors. The clientele primarily consisted of LSE students and local office workers. The spacious, high-ceilinged interior enhanced the vibrant and lively atmosphere. The George IV is undeniably a captivating pub, and my time here was thoroughly enjoyable. While the pub stands as a must-visit in London, it’s advisable to plan ahead, as it remains closed on weekends.
