A Contemporary Hub at Leytonstone’s Crossroads
Standing proudly at the junction of the High Road and Harvey Road in Leytonstone, this grand establishment welcomes all who seek its embrace. Merely a three-minute stroll from the Leytonstone Tube station, it beckons with open arms.
With a history dating back to 1670, the current structure, erected in 1891, holds within its walls a tapestry of tales. The Red Lion once played host to legendary gigs by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Yes, Genesis, and Roxy Music during the vibrant 1970s. After a period of dormancy, its revival in 2011 by Antic pubs breathed new life into its storied halls.
Inside, a spacious, high-ceilinged interior greets patrons with the distinctive Antic shabby-chic aesthetic. The main bar exudes a laid-back charm, adorned with pale green walls and an assortment of sofas, tables, and chairs, accentuated by an eclectic array of mirrors. Noteworthy period features, such as corinthian columns and sections of the ceiling, add to the venue’s allure. Towards the rear, a partitioned dining area offers a cozy retreat, while entertainment options like a Pinball Machine and Table Football await nearby. Outside, a sprawling walled beer garden provides ample seating, while upstairs, a Ballroom caters to functions, complemented by boutique bedrooms for those wishing to extend their stay.
The beer selection impresses with a diverse mix of continental and local brews, including five cask ales to tantalize the taste buds. Opting for a Pravha, I found my pint to be a refreshing delight, with prices meeting expectations. The food menu offers a simple yet satisfying array, featuring burgers, classic pub fare, and Sunday roasts—Fish & Chips priced at £14.
Arriving just before 4 pm on a balmy Saturday afternoon in September, we found the main bar to be tranquilly subdued, with a jubilant post-wedding gathering unfolding just beyond the partition. Meanwhile, the garden buzzed with activity, hosting both large groups and solitary imbibers, all against the backdrop of a nostalgic 90s American rock soundtrack.
As a local resident, my daughter has frequented this establishment on numerous occasions, and it’s easy to understand why. Despite its location on a bustling high street, The Red Lion exudes a distinct sense of community. With its diverse beer selection, affordably priced offerings, and inviting ambiance, @redlione11 stands as a beacon of modern-day conviviality—a true gem well worth a visit.
